Airline hit by delays and disruptions due to ‘technical problem’

British Airways has been hit by a technical fault which appears to have caused major delays and disruptions to its flights across Europe.

As reports of flight delays and problems with the national carrier’s website surfaced on social media on Monday (Tuesday AEDT), a British Airways spokesman said the airline was working to resolve a “technical issue”.

“Our flights are currently operating but there are delays as our teams work to resolve a technical issue affecting some of our systems,” a British Airways spokesman said in a statement.

On X, as angry customers asked about the status of delayed flights and its website, the airline told a user it had “no time frame for when this will be resolved.”

Heathrow Airport, which is the airline’s main base in London, said it was working with British Airways to provide passengers with updates.

“We are aware of the technical issue that British Airways is investigating. We will work with them to provide passengers with updates as soon as they are available. Heathrow systems are operating as normal,” a Heathrow airport spokesman said.

All other airlines are operating as normal at Heathrow, the spokesman added.

At London’s Gatwick Airport, British Airways “had a short-term problem” but there was no disruption, a spokesman said.

The airline’s website appeared to be down in the UK and showed an error message: “We are currently experiencing high demand on ba.com. Thank you for your patience.”

Customers in Australia could access his site.

The airline, which is owned by International Airlines Group, has previously experienced technical problems that have resulted in flight delays and cancellations.

British Airways canceled more than 100 flights in 2019 after the airline’s computer systems crashed.

Cancellations in 2019 affected thousands of passengers using London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports after flight check-in and start-up systems suffered a partial breakdown.

An additional 300 flights faced delays of up to an hour, according to the airline’s website at the time.
