The to flee the best value for money for Australians and the ones that will cost you the most for the shortest trip have been revealed.
Number crunchers are ranked Australia top 10 most popular international flights based on their average cost per minute.
And the cheapest trip for Australians was Perth Singapore.
According to Money.com.au’s research, it came out on top with an average cost per minute of just $1.41.
It’s roughly in the middle of the pack in terms of flight duration, meaning travelers on this route can easily reach Southeast Asia, enjoying both good value for money compared to other routes and a manageable journey time.
Of course it helps if you live in Perth.
Meanwhile, Melbourne to Singapore comes in second in terms of value, with a cost per minute of $1.78, followed by Perth to Denpasar in Bali, with a cost per minute of $1.96.
The flight from Melbourne to Singapore not only finished second for best value for money, but also came in at number one as the best value for a long-haul flight.
With a flight time of approximately seven hours and 55 minutes, it offers a reasonable price per minute of $1.78.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the scale, Brisbane to Singapore has the highest cost per minute, at $3.18.
Money.com.au Financial expert Sean Callery says many travelers are looking for ways beyond the obvious to get the best possible value from their trip.
“Considering total costs together with travel time offers travelers a new dimension to measuring value for money,” he says.
“The research shows that if you choose a longer trip, in some cases you can also spend more money.
“Singapore is a good example as flights from Melbourne and Sydney represent on average very good value on a cost per minute basis compared to flying across the ditch to Auckland.”
Indeed, the Melbourne to Auckland route offers the best value for flights to New Zealand, with an average price per minute of $2.31, while Sydney to Auckland has a higher price per minute of $2.74.
The results were calculated by ranking the top 10 most popular international flights based on the number of outbound passengers in May 2024 from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE).
It used the average cost of the five lowest fares for a direct flight to each destination on Australia’s major airlines: Qantas Airways, Jetstar, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand.
Flight dates between October 1 and 31, 2024 and the total fare divided by the total flight duration.
