Russia and Ukraine exchanged a record number drone attacks, with Moscow launching a total of 145 drones on Saturday night – the most ever in a single nighttime attack in the war.
Ukraine meanwhile fired an unprecedented number of drones towards Russian capital in the night from Saturday to Sunday.
“Last night, Russia launched a record 145 Shahed and other strike drones against Ukraine,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy he said on Sunday.

Shahed drones are cheap, one-way attack drones. They are “drop and forget,” meaning that a flight path is programmed, the drone is launched, and then it flies autonomously toward the target area.

Zelenskyy added that during the week, Russia used more than 800 guided aerial bombs, about 600 strike drones and almost 20 missiles of various types.

The command of the Ukrainian Air Force announced in a statement that Russia “attacked Ukraine with a record number of drones” on Saturday night. By 9.30am (4.30pm AEDT) on Sunday, 62 drones had been shot down by Ukrainian defences, according to the Air Force Command.

“Sixty-seven enemy drones were lost located in different regions of Ukraine, and another 10 Russian drones left Ukrainian airspace in the direction of Moldova, Belarus and Russia,” it said.

Meanwhile, Ukraine launched its biggest attack on Moscow since the start of the war, suspending flights at two airports in the Russian capital.

A total of 34 drones were launched in the direction of Moscow, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced. Russian air defenses shot down all drones over the Moscow region between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The drones were shot down over the Moscow regions of Ramenskoye, Kolomna and Domodedovo, said Andrey Vorobyov, the governor of the Moscow region.

Shrapnel from falling drones caused a fire in two houses in Ramenskoye. The woman, 52, was injured by shrapnel and was taken to hospital with “burns on her face, neck and hands,” Vorobyov said, adding that the woman was in intensive care.

Sunday’s attack forced “temporary restrictions” on flights at Domodedovo and Zhukovsky, two airports serving the Moscow region, shortly after 8 a.m., Russian state media agency TASS reported, citing Russia’s Federal Aviation Agency. The restrictions were lifted shortly after 10 a.m. local time.

CNN has reached out to Ukrainian officials for comment.

The previous largest drone attack on Moscow was in September, when Russia said it destroyed at least 20 Ukrainian attack drones.

In that attack, at least one person was killed near Moscow, Russian authorities announced. Three of Moscow’s four airports were closed for more than six hours, and nearly 50 flights were diverted.
