2024 US election: When were the Pennsylvania election results released and why were they so important?

The martial law Pennsylvania loomed as the key piece American elections puzzle, with its 19 Electoral College votes more than any of the seven swing states.

After hours of hanging in the balance, the Keystone State eventually turned red, voting in favor of Donald Trump for the second time in three elections.

Here’s what we know about how the race went.

When were the Pennsylvania election results released?

Many Pennsylvania ballots that were counted early favored Kamala Harris.

But unlike in 2020, when mail-in votes and other late-count ballots went in Democrats’ favor, this time it was Trump who made up for it as the day wore on.

The Associated Press finally called him stateside at 6.24pm AEDT.

By midday on November 7 (again AEDT), Trump had 50.5 percent of the vote to Harris’ 48.6 percent, with 98 percent of ballots counted.

Why was Pennsylvania so important?

For starters, it has 19 Electoral College votes up for grabs – more than any other swing state.

It is also a diverse country, with all sides of politics represented in major cities and regional areas.

This means that no party can confidently claim it as their own before election day.

Most importantly, it’s part of the so-called ‘Blue Wall’ of states, along with Michigan and Wisconsin, that loomed as Harris’ most likely path to victory.

If she had won those three battlegrounds, it would have been enough to seal her path to the White House, regardless of what happened in other swing states.

As it happened, Trump ended up winning all three.

Which way did Pennsylvania vote before?

2024 is only the second time Pennsylvania has voted Republican in the last three decades.

Before going to Trump in 2016, Pennsylvania had been solidly Democratic since 1992.

In 2020, Joe Biden carried the state by the narrowest of margins, holding onto 50.01 percent of the vote, or a lead of about 80,500 votes.

When Trump won in 2016, he won by just 44,292 votes. This time the difference is bigger, in the range of 100,000 votes.
