Cash supporters are said to have launched an attack on a popular fast food restaurant in Melbourne’s west following news that the chain had stopped accepting cash.

A car crashed into the front of Nando’s on Barkly St in Footscray at around 2.15am on Friday.

The side of the car was spray-painted: “We do not accept cash here.”

“On arrival no one was present and a stolen white Volkswagen sedan was still at the scene,” Victoria Police said.

“At this stage, investigators do not believe the building has been entered and the exact circumstances are yet to be established.”

Victoria Police have recovered the crime scene, including boarding up the front of the restaurant.

The alleged attack is believed to be linked to the announcement of Nando’s decision to go cashless earlier this year.

The popular chicken chain only accepts cards at restaurants, and it’s a decision that has divided customers across the country.

Although Nando’s appears to have been cashless for some time, news of the card-only policy was revealed in a Reddit post when the eatery posted a photo of a sign in a busy store.

The note affixed to an EFTPOS machine read: “We’re just a card!

“Sorry, I guess we’re already part of the New World Order.

“Just kidding, card payments mean we spend less time counting coins and more time perfecting your chicken.”
