Thousands of delivery drivers criss-cross the country in a race to drop off presents before Christmas.

Workers at US giant Amazon are busy transporting parcels from warehouses to doorsteps.

Phil Rock has been an Amazon Flex driver for 14 months.

We joined him as he delivered packages in Brisbane.

“This is my own office running,” he said.

“I usually put on my music, drinks, little snacks and go.”

During his four-hour shift, he can deliver up to 50 parcels while navigating unfamiliar suburban streets, traffic and the occasional barking dog.

“It’s usually about 75km each trip,” he said.

“This is me recording from my home to the delivery point to collect all the parcels, then after I’ve run my route, I finish up and go back home.”

Extra drivers were employed and opening hours were extended to cope with the increased demand ahead of Christmas.

Amazon’s Australian boss Janet Menzies is keeping a close eye on the country’s operations.

“We build our network throughout the year to make sure we’re ready,” she said.

“The role of the delivery driver is so important that we are so grateful for all of our partners and team members at this time of year.”

Prime members can order by December 22nd for free shipping.

Non-members have until December 20 for select items.

For sending gifts with Australia Post, 20 December is the closing date for standard delivery, 23 December for Express.

Additional time required for WA, Tasmania and remote areas.
