Now that more and more automation is coming airports Around the world, most travelers will probably already have to put their own luggage tag on their suitcase.

And whether you then drop off your bag at one airline employee or in an automatic bag drop machine, a baggage handler has revealed a crucial step that many people actually forget.

I’m sharing some advice about a long-lasting one Reddit thread, a disaster agent for American Airlines noticed an extra step you need to do when placing the luggage tag on your bag.

“On your luggage tag there are three bingo stickers with your itinerary on them. Take one off and stick it on your suitcase,” the airline employee said.

“This way, even if the luggage tag is torn off at some point, we can still get it to its destination.”

The stickers look like small barcodes at the end of the long luggage tag and can easily be removed and placed elsewhere on the suitcase.

Another thing he mentions is the location of the luggage tag. Although many signs indicate that it should be placed around the side handle (if your suitcase has one), the staff member suggests that the top handle is better.

“If the label is on the top handle, the handle that faces outward on the cart, errors are more likely to be caught,” he explains.

In the same thread, the employee also revealed the the exact type of luggage passengers should use while traveling.

“Avoid plastic hard-shell suitcases,” he wrote. “These are incredibly slippery and tend to slide off the bag cart as it turns, taking everything on it with it.”

Instead, cloth suitcases have more friction and are “more likely to stay where we put them.”
