As captain of a cruise shipIvan Mladina has been at the helm of cruising holidays that last from several days to several months.
As many people consider going on a cruise for the first time, many are wondering ‘what is the ideal length of a cruise?’
Carnival splendorCaptain Mladina shared some of his advice with 9Travel, revealing that for beginners, a shorter cruise is the way to go.
How long is the ideal cruise?
Ivan says short breaks are perfect for those new to cruising, before opting for longer voyages once you get the hang of it.
“It gives you a taste of the fun you’ll experience when you choose a cruise. Once you fall in love with the experience, the longer voyages are great for exploring the world at a leisurely pace, without the hassle of always packing and moving ”, he explains.
“They are also ideal for families who want extra peace of mind knowing that their travel plans are taken care of and the friendly team they know and trust are waiting for them on board, whether they have spent a day exploring a new port city or relaxing on a beautiful beach. “
After joining Carnival in 2009, Ivan says being a cruise captain is now the “best job in the world.”
“For me, becoming a captain has been a lifelong journey because I was drawn to the sea from a very young age. I remember writing a Mother’s Day card at the age of five and declaring that one day I would become a captain.”
How to get the most out of a cruise vacation
Sharing more of his advice, Ivan also says that getting to know your fellow cruisers is a great way to really get the most out of your holiday.
“Cruises are a great way to make new friends and explore the world together. The connections you make can last a lifetime,” he says.
“Be sure to read your Fun Times or Hub app to make sure you take part in all the fun activities that our friendly team on board have prepared for you.”
Although Sydney is his favorite port for sailing in and out of the world (ideal as Carnival Splendor is based here all year round!), his favorite cruise in the region is actually across the ditch.
“My favorite cruise in this part of the world would have to be to New Zealand’s North Island. The landscapes and culture are absolutely breathtaking,” he reveals.
“But without a doubt, Sydney is the most fascinating port in the world, and it is an honor to captain the ship that calls this great city home. The views as we sail away from this city are nothing short of breathtaking.”
