Thailand has been declared ‘Destination of the Year’ by the prestigious Travel and leisure magazine.
The country is already a popular tourist mecca and was chosen for its “rich cultural heritage, dynamic culinary scene and seamless blend of tradition with modern innovation”.
Jeninne Lee-St. John, the editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, commented: “Once you understand the place, it’s impossible not to fall for it.
‘Whether you visit the mountainous north or the southern coast along the Andaman Sea, the country reveals its treasures gradually, and mostly through word of mouth.
“There is so much creativity in art, food and hospitality that it can be difficult to decide where to go and what to do.”
She also highlighted the country’s luxury hotels, which will see a boost next year as the next series of The White Lotus is set in Thailand.
This is the tenth year that the editors have selected a top destination. Previously featured countries include Costa Rica, Mexico and Italy.
Jacqui Gifford, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure, said Thailand is a worthy winner.
“Whether visitors explore Bangkok’s cutting-edge culinary scene, relax on one of the country’s 1,430 islands, or experience renowned hospitality at some of the world’s finest luxury hotels, Thailand offers a unique adventure for every type of traveler.”
Chompu Marusachot of the Tourism Authority of Thailand calls it a great honor: “Such recognition from a respected travel publication reinforces Thailand’s timeless charm and renowned hospitality, which resonates with visitors around the world.”
