Exit polls are a set of polls asked of voters leaving polling stations about their political views and why they voted a certain way in the election.
Data from these polls that can characterize the direction of an election are usually not released until after the polls close.
The national exit poll is conducted in the US on Election Day, while exit polls are also held in key states such as Arizona, Florida, Michigan and Nevada.
