Family road trip tips: Little Harry Curtain has been to Australia five times with his family

By the time he was six months old, little Harry Curtain had been to every mainland state in the country – twice.

In fact, he was only three weeks old when his family went on a trip away.

Now that he’s almost five, he’s already been there Australia five times.

The Curtain family Tom Curtain and Annabel have been on the road for six months.

“He has probably seen more of Australia than most people,” mother Annabel tells 9Travel.

That’s because his father is Tom Curtain, a country musician who has won a Golden Guitar and who has been touring the country performing for almost six months.

The family is currently on his Good Life tourwhich combines their family’s award-winning Katherine Outback Experience Northern Territory at home, with Tom’s music.

Harry’s little sister Lottie three also joins their parents on the road – along with ten horses, twelve dogs and four goats, and a crew to look after them.

And while many families are hesitant to take young children on such epic journeys, the family has it all together.

“You just make it educational,” Tom tells 9Travel.

“I drive the truck. Annabel drives a car and pulls a caravan, so we take turns driving with the children. The children love sitting in the truck with their car seats.

“They like to listen to a lot of music while we travel. They ask a million questions about the scenery, the livestock, the sheep fences and things like that.”

They do play car classics, and also iSpy, he says.

Of course, seeing wildlife such as emus on their long drives keeps them entertained in some areas.

“Lottie was six weeks old when we first went out, so they jump in the car,” says Annabel.

Meanwhile, Annabel admits that they pack too much stuff for the children, who are often content to simply play in the long grass or kick an old foot when they stop.

“This year I immediately returned it, they both have one backpack with toys,” she says.

And while they do have iPads, they are ‘strict’ about what they use them for. But Annabel says there are some gadgets she and Tom can’t live without when traveling.

An air fryer has become indispensable, and at the campsite they even cook with it outside

“We don’t cook in the caravan. There are a few more vans and they cook their own meals and come together, we’ll have a big, a big social dinner,” she says.

Plus, Starlink internet means they can stay connected to run their business and Harry can take part in School of the Air classes wherever they are.

Of course, life on the road is not without accidents.

From flat tires to going the wrong way, they have been through a lot.

“Last year we ended up on a mountain with the caravan in it, a huge storm. We got halfway and saw a sign that said: no trucks or caravans… we had to keep driving,” says Annabel.

“Thank God we don’t suffer from anxiety.”
