A fruit grower has been charged after a man was found dead in a cold room at a Victorian warehouse.
In March 2023 The 50-year-old man was found unresponsive in the low-oxygen facility used by fresh produce company Gvip Storage Pty Ltd.
The discovery was made after the man’s car was spotted outside the warehouse with the engine running.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to WorkSafe Victoria, the cool room was used to preserve apples.
Gvip Storage Pty Ltd has now been charged with two offenses under the Health and Safety at Work Act.
“WorkSafe alleges that the company failed to reduce the risk of serious injury or death by prohibiting entry into cool, controlled-atmosphere working rooms and by having clear and conspicuous warning signs,” the work safety watchdog said.
The matter is listed for hearing at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
