While airlines stay with new and innovative ways to help combat travel fatiguethere are also things you can do as a passenger to reduce the risk consequences of jet lag.
And who better to get advice from than the people who are constantly in the air.
Agnès Chantre, a captain at Air Tahiti Nuishared a part of her top tricks of 9Travelemphasizing that it’s all about what you do before you go.
“The most important trick to beating jet lag is to get to your destination before you arrive,” says Agnès.
“Some airline crews start this process days before flying long distances, and changing your bedtime in small increments leading up to the trip can do wonders for getting your body clock closer to the time zone you’re going to.”
The pilot also suggests eating meals at the times you are at your destination.
“It’s another trick you can implement a few days in advance so your body can adapt more easily,” she says.
“I also recommend eating lightly before and during a flight and drinking plenty of water once you’re in the air to avoid dehydration.”
Indeed, dehydration can worsen jet lag symptoms. So drink plenty of water before, during and after your flight to counteract the effects of dry cabin air. Also avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can dehydrate you and affect your sleep
What to do after you land
Once you reach your destination, Agnès says to try to get to local time as quickly as possible.
“Falling asleep in the middle of the day and then being awake all night is the last thing anyone wants on vacation,” she emphasizes.
