NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb threatens to cancel NYE fireworks

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb has threatened to cancel New Year’s Eve fireworks in Sydney’s central business district in response to strike action proposed by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union.

Webb told the ABC he would not rule out recommending a government shutdown if strike action continued.

She said not being able to get people out of the CBD would lead to increased safety issues.

The NSW Government will still launch an 11th-hour legal challenge to try to stop widespread transport cancellations on New Year’s Eve as millions of revelers descend on Sydney.

Previously notified work bans by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union can be reinstated following a Federal Court ruling on Thursday.

One of the actions involves stopping the entire network unless trains run 24 hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
