The Ukrainian General Staff announced that several explosions and detonations were heard in the targeted area.
In a statement carried by Russian news agencies, the Russian Defense Ministry said the military shot down five military tactical missile systems, known as ATACMS, and damaged another.
The fragments fell on the area of an unspecified military facility, the ministry announced. Falling debris sparked a fire but did not cause any damage or casualties, it said.
Neither side’s claims could be independently verified.
Earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian officials reported that at least 12 people, including a child, were killed in the third Russian attack in three days on a civilian residential area in Ukraine.
A Shahed drone strike in northern Sumy region late Monday hit a dormitory at an educational institution in the city of Hlukhiv and wounded 11 others, including two children, authorities said, adding that more people may be trapped under the rubble.
Ukrainian civilians have been repeatedly targeted by Russian drones and missiles during the war, while on the battlefield it is under heavy Russian pressure in places along a 1,000-kilometer front line where its army is stretched against a larger opponent.
On Sunday, a Russian ballistic missile carrying cluster munitions hit a residential district of Sumy in northern Ukraine, killing 11 people and injuring 84.
On Monday, a Russian missile barrage sparked apartment fires in the southern port of Odesa, killing at least 10 people and injuring 43.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the series of airstrikes proved that Russian President Vladimir Putin was not interested in ending the war.
“Each new Russian attack only confirms Putin’s true intentions. He wants the war to continue. Peace talks are not interesting to him. We must force Russia to a just peace by force,” Zelenskyy said.
