Stevie Jacobs’ favorite family-friendly stay

Stevie Jacobs, 57, has traveled the world, stayed in thousands of hotels and ticked off an enviable ‘bucket list’ of experiences. But when it comes to holidays with daughters Isabella, 13, and Francesca, 11, his favorite destination is much closer to home.

“I grew up in Wollongong and it was absolutely amazing as a kid,” Stevie explains. Like Nine Today show weatherman from 2005-2016, Stevie says the team broadcast from some of the most incredible locations in the world, but none encompassed everything Wollongong had to offer.

“I realized how amazing Wollongong is: pristine beaches, turquoise waters, the beautiful Illawarra Escarpment, mountains and dramatic cliffs all on your doorstep.”

It’s not just the natural wonders that make Wollongong so attractive. Stevie, who recently opened Bonditony’s Burger Joint in Enmore with his mate Tony Gosden, says the beachside town has transformed into a cosmopolitan mix of cool cafes and impressive restaurants, trendy shops, vibrant nightlife, a modern marina and plenty offers activities for every member’s family vacation style.

Here’s Stevie’s guide to where to eat, play and stay while in Wollongong with the family.

Q. Stevie, what makes Wollongong a great option for a family weekend getaway?

“Wollongong may be just a 90-minute drive from Sydney, but it feels like a world away from the daily grind – a chance for the family to reset and connect. It’s the perfect mix of fun, nature, relaxation and quality time for the whole family.”

Q. What was on your itinerary for your recent stay in Wollongong?

“Francesca had been asking me for an electric scooter for years, so she was thrilled when we arrived and discovered we could rent it for a ride around town.

“There’s so much to do in Wollongong, from exploring the rock pools and beaches to paddle boarding, jet skiing, hang gliding… or you can check out skydiver land at Stuart Park.

“There are also scenic coastal, woodland and bush walks, but I decided to take Isabella and Francesca for a walk to the lighthouse and tell stories from my youth – days spent surfing, hanging out in my brother’s van and telling stories about Dinky the Donkey, who used to hang out on the Blue Mile.

‘Back at our hotel, Novotel Northbeach from ALL.comIsabella and Francesca took a dip in the heated pool, we hung out in our private cabana and enjoyed a seafood platter, then headed to North Bar for the hotel’s signature chocolate cake dessert and live music. The girls loved it.”

“We live in Bondi and have been lucky enough to see migrating whales, but nothing compares to experiencing a whale watching cruise up close. The girls were so excited to see a whale breaching – a mother, her calf and a whole group of whales – spouting water.”

Quiet connections

“I grew up playing pinball in the front of our family store, Max Mart, eating dagwood dogs, surfing and biking around town. It was so fun to be able to share my childhood memories with my daughters. And create new ones.

“We had fish and chips on the beach and spent an afternoon together in our hotel suite. The girls fed a sulphur-crested cockatoo that visited us on our balcony, Francesca had a spa bath and we bundled up in our hotel robes, curled up in bed and watched a family movie together. watched.”

Tasty experiences

“When we’re at home we eat quite healthy – no sugary juices or soft drinks. But when we’re on holiday the girls like to try new things. Francesca had her first mocktail – she felt very grown up – and Isabella tried her first oyster. And kept it low!

“The girls couldn’t believe their eyes when we arrived for breakfast at the buffet and saw a giant Nutella jar, which they ate with pancakes and pastries, before moving on to the hot food.

“Wollongong now has so many great places to eat. I think the steelworks has brought in a lot of international workers and cultural influences so you can enjoy fantastic food from all corners of the world.”

Finer details

“I’ve stayed in some of the most luxurious hotels, but it’s the little details that make the difference. The view from our NovotelWollongong Northbeach suite made our coastal escape that much more special.
