Paul appeared to be the stronger fighter throughout the fight with the judges’ scores going in his favor, 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73.
In Tyson’s first return to the ring after a 19-year absence, he pushed Paul to the end of eight rounds.
RECAPITULATION: Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul
His 27-year-old opponent landed 78 of his 278 punches, while Tyson landed just 18 of his 97 punches.
Many on commentary questioned Paul’s actions in the ring as he failed to land any of his signature heavy punches.
“The question I have is why doesn’t Jake Paul just hit him,” Rose Perez said in a commentary on Netflix.
As the fight drew to a close, Paul bowed in respect to his opponent before embracing the boxing great as the final bells sounded.
A few minutes later, the YouTuber’s hand was raised.
“I’m not surprised at all,” boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. said of the result.
Despite declaring victory, Paul admitted that Tyson will forever be “the greatest to ever do it.”
“First and foremost, Mike Tyson, that’s such an honor… I look up to him and I’m inspired by him,” Paul said.
“I’m absolutely happy, yes,” replied the former world champion.
“I knew who was a good fighter and he was ready. I didn’t prove anything to anyone, only myself. I’m just happy with what I can do.”
After seemingly struggling with a knee injury, Tyson confirmed that this fight won’t be the last time fans see him step into the ring.
