In a brief statement, NATO said Trump and his Secretary General Mark Rutte met on Friday in Palm Beach, Florida.
“They discussed a range of global security issues facing the Alliance,” the statement said without elaborating.
It appeared to be Rutte’s first meeting with Trump since the November 5 election.
Rutte previously congratulated Trump and said that “his leadership will once again be key to keeping our Alliance strong” and that he looks forward to working with him.
For years, Trump has expressed skepticism about the Western alliance and complained about the defense costs of many of its member countries, which he considered too low.

He described NATO allies as leeches on the US military and openly questioned the value of the alliance that has defined US foreign policy for decades.
He threatened that he would not defend NATO members who do not meet defense spending targets.
Rutte and his team also met with Trump’s choice for national security adviser, US Rep. Michael Waltz, and other members of the president-elect’s national security team, according to a NATO statement.
Rutte took over as head of NATO in October.
