One of the most frustrating things about staying in one hotel is when you open the minibar and discover that a bottle of water costs $7.
Sure, you could drink tap water water but it never seems to get cold enough. And in some places it just doesn’t taste as good as it does at home.
On the Life Pro Tips subreddit, a user posted a thread with the title: “If you need filtered/drinkable water at a hotel and don’t want to pay for it, go to the gym.”
“The gym usually has at least a cold water dispenser,” they wrote in a response. “Some are even bottled at the gym.”
“This may only be a US thing, but it has worked for me in most hotels I’ve been to.”
The comments section of the post was flooded with travelers who loved the idea. “How have I never thought about this?” one person wrote. “My biggest problem with hotels!”
Another said they even found extra freebies when they visited the hotel gym. “I once stayed at a pretty fancy hotel in Manhattan and they not only had free aluminum bottles of water, but also some protein bars that I snacked on.”
While you’re there, you can also weigh your luggage if you’re concerned about being overweight, as most hotel gyms also have scales.
If your hotel doesn’t have a gym but does have conference rooms, you might be in luck. “I also found that some hotels have water stations on the conference floors,” one commenter suggested. “Just pretend you’re at a meeting and fill your bottle.”
The hack is not only a great way to save money on water, it also reduces the amount of single-use plastic you use! Double victory!
Make sure your reusable bottle is empty before going through airport security. You can refill it once you get to the gate.
