It’s too close right now, but either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris will be the next president of the United States.
As the United States prepares for a transition of power, experts believe the world can expect continuity in leadership from Harris’ presidency.
While Harris didn’t enter the vice presidency with vast experience on the global stage, she did get a crash course in foreign diplomacy while playing a supporting role in Joe Biden’s administration.
Her advisers have since argued that nothing could have prepared her better if she were to ascend to the top job.
Harris has visited more than 20 countries and met with more than 150 world leaders, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
She stood by the policies of the Biden-Harris administration during her tenure under the experienced foreign policy president, and experts believe this is a good indicator of what the world can expect.
For Australia, this is what a first-term Harris administration could mean for our best interests.
Will AUKUS remain strong?
President Joe Biden has shown strong support for AUKUS and said in a previous speech, “It’s an unusual name, AUKUS, but it’s a powerful entity.”
This stance should give Australians confidence that the partnership will continue under the Kamala Harris administration, according to Center for United States Studies director of economic security Hayley Channer.
“Kamala will continue Biden’s political approach,” Channer said.
That assurance was echoed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who described Harris as “a good friend of Australia” in July.
“She understands us, she is a strong supporter of AUKUS,” Albanese told Sky News.
Channer said the trilateral security partnership would continue under either a Trump or Harris administration.
“AUKUS has value for all three countries – including the UK – and that’s why they’ve worked so hard to get this deal done,” she said.
Similar to the vice president’s position on AUKUS, Harris appears to agree with Joe Biden’s economic policies.
“Many of Harris’s economic policies are similar to Biden’s, so it would be more of a continuation of the current trajectory,” Channer said.
Harris arranges celebrities by battleground states in the final hours
The Biden administration has largely kept the Trump-era anti-China tariffs in place and introduced others.
Experts believe the Harris administration is likely to use tariffs, mainly on China, to address what the US believes is unfair competition.
A close partner in the Indo Pacific region
Australia is one of the United States’ closest allies in the Indo-Pacific region.
This is due to the benefits that our nation offers both strategically and economically.
“We’re probably going to do better than other countries, whether it’s Trump or Harris,” Channer said.
“The region has already experienced Trump’s presidency, so the countries will already be very familiar with his style of operation.
“All of them will have plans to engage the Trump or Harris administrations.”
