The airport habit that Aussies find most annoying: crowds at the baggage claim and boarding gate

There’s nothing like a busy situation airport combined with pre-holiday stress that can sometimes bring out the worst in people.

As such, the airport can be a frustrating place for many travelers. Recently one sign speeding up delays in drop-off zones (by limit hugs to three minutes) went viral, with many complaining people having to spend so long saying goodbye in the first place.

So we thought we’d ask the question ‘what’ airport habit do you find most annoying?’ in a recent survey of nine readers. And while overcrowded drop-off areas were said to be a nuisance, other actions were seen as much more annoying.

“There’s a lot of annoying behavior at airports! Hard to pick one in particular,” one person commented.

Only three percent of respondents felt that delivery delays were the worst of their problems.

Instead, the two “most annoying” airport habits, as voted by our readers, had to do with generally getting in the way of travelers. Regardless of whether they are not aware of it or whether they do it for selfish reasons.

According to the Aussies, the worst airport habit is overcrowding the baggage carousel.

“I always found the crowds at the carousel intense,” read one comment.

In second place were the people who queued at the gate before boarding, also known as ‘gate lice’.

“The impatience of the passengers is incomprehensible to me, as all passengers go to their destination at the same time on the same vessel,” was one response.

Carrying too much luggage and being unprepared are other airport habits that Aussies find frustrating.

Eighteen percent of respondents said that resulting security delays were the most annoying, with some urging airlines not to be stricter in monitoring passenger behavior.

Not having passports or boarding passes at hand and having to wait in queues were also experienced as annoying by 10 percent of respondents.

It was also said that people were taking several seats in the departure hall.

“All the redundant security protocols at airports are so annoying these days, but under the circumstances you can understand why. It’s better to be safe, but it’s frustrating at the same time,” one person said.

“As far as airports are concerned, it’s a matter of being organized and allowing enough time,” said another.

Of course, passenger frustration generally doesn’t end once we board the plane, as some people have noted.

The problem of too much luggage has also been a sticking point when it comes to issues surrounding insufficient overhead luggage space.

“People who take too much carry-on luggage use the overhead bins,” read one comment.

Oh, and please remain seated until the seat belt signs are turned off. The airplane doors do not open faster.
