It’s no wonder that Gillian Woodley has a lot of tips when it comes to… luggage.
The travel agent has been to 120 countries.
And she recently made a change after 28 years in the business, admitting she should have changed her suitcase choice much sooner.
“I’ve gone to a four-wheeled bag. And I can’t believe how much easier it is to have four wheels at airports,” Gillian, 51, from Hobart, tells 9Travel.
“However, I would say it should always suit the places you’re going. It wasn’t ideal for cobbled streets on flights or stairs.”
As anyone who’s been to Italy and other European hotspots might agree, she says opting for a backpack might be better for those kinds of places.
Some cities have even banned loudly dragging a business through centuries-old streets
However, make sure you choose the color carefully.
A major European airline even went so far as to warn passengers against choosing luggage in black, gray or navy blue to “avoid confusion” while traveling.
Meanwhile, wherever she goes, Gillian’s packing list also includes a small umbrella, poncho (“not the most attractive looking outfit, but it’s easy to pack and versatile”), a multi-function travel adapter and a charger.
And while she, like many travelers these days, uses cubes when packing, she has some pretty drastic advice.
“Pack your suitcase and take half of it out,” said the Travel partnerssays officer, adding that women generally always pack too many pairs of shoes.
Despite all her travels, she was lucky to have only lost her suitcase once. That was 14 years ago and it still has never surfaced.
And there’s really only one other accident that she can remember during her many years of traveling the world
“When I arrived at the airport, I had the wrong passport,” she says.
“Time was very tight and I had to get a neighbor to break into the house and have my dad drive the passport to Sydney Airport to actually get on the flight.
“The moral is: always check your documents.”
