For many people who pay that extra fee for a seat with a little more legroom, or a seat that is closer to the front of the seat aeroplaneis not an option.
But a new travel trend promises travelers the chance to score a better spot on the plane, but you’ll need some patience and a bit of luck before it pays off.
Passengers jumping on a new practice called “check-in chicken.”
The idea behind ‘check-in chicken’ ensures that travelers postpone their online check-in until the last minute.
This depends on the fact that airlines often charge extra for better seats, and initially allocate the less desirable seats to the back of the plane.
But once the check-in deadline approaches, the remaining seats are released for free and are usually better seats, including those with extra legroom.
According to @cheapholidayexpert, a TikToker who recently posted about the trend, she’s made it work almost every time she tried it.
But she warns not to leave it too late
“I actually have another five and a half hours to check in, but right now it’s good to check in and see the lay of the land,” she said in a video.
“Because at the end of the day you don’t want to be left without a seat. Sometimes these airlines like to overbook.”
Travel experts on a holiday site in Great BritainTravel Republic also suggest to follow the seating map online.
“Many airlines release final seating charts as boarding time approaches,” they told the newspaper Washingtonpost.
“You can often see via the airline’s app or website which seats are still available and get closer to an empty row.”
